Free Cemetery Preservation Workshop - May 28, 2022

A free cemetery preservation workshop is scheduled at Pike County’s Historic Sandfield Cemetery on Saturday, May 28, 2022 from 9:00 to 3:00.

The Sandfield Cemetery is a large, rural community cemetery established in the early 1800’s. It is collocated with the Zebulon Baptist Church established in 1888. Both are located on AL-223 which is reportedly a part of the historic Three Notch Road connecting Ft. Barrancas, FL with Ft. Mitchell, AL.

This is the third consecutive year that Jonathan Appell of Connecticut-based Atlas Preservation has undertaken a 48 State Tour conducting free cemetery preservation workshops. His two previous workshops in Alabama were at Tuscaloosa’s Greenwood Cemetery and were extremely beneficial to the cemetery in general and the local DAR Chapter’s Patriot Grave Marking project as well as educational to those in attendance. The attached flyer outlines Jon’s approach to conducting each workshop – and do not overlook what knowledge can be gained from the initial walk and talk tour through the cemetery where Jon points out things of interest and why they are interesting from a conservator’s point of view – Jon is a pro at doing this. The flyer also provides maps and the street address to enter into you nav systems.

Hands on cleaning materials will be provided but that’s about it. There are no shade trees in the cemetery so do bring sunscreen and wear a wide-brimmed hat - better add bug repellant just in case. The church will make their restrooms available. Lunch, snacks, ice & water will NOT be provided so please bring what will need to be self-sufficient. No registration is required for this workshop but I would appreciate a note by return email if you intend to attend this free workshop.

I hope to see you all on May 28th!.

Ted Urquhart, President Emeritus,

Alabama Cemetery Preservation Alliance, Inc. (ACPA)
