Cemetery Program's Can's and Cannot's

While the Alabama Historical Commission is dedicated to the preservation, documentation and restoration of historic cemeteries within the state, we are limited in our ability to help in every situation. This information sheet provides guidance on what the AHC can and cannot do to help you or your organization. The AHC CAN

•	Teach individuals and organizations how to conduct a cemetery survey.
•	Provide official historic designation through the Alabama Historic Cemetery Register.
•	Make information on the cemetery laws of Alabama available and offer support to law enforcement when needed.
•	Supply technical assistance on how to properly clean and restore gravestones.
•	Provide information on consultants who perform cemetery repairs.
•	Issue permits for appropriate cemetery work.
•	Offer names of consultants who offer Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and other forms of remote sensing.
•	Answer questions concerning the general history of cemeteries in Alabama.

The AHC CANNOT

•	Give money for every cemetery that needs a survey or restoration. Our grants program is small and very competitive.
•	Perform cemetery surveys for all cemeteries in Alabama. While all cemeteries are important, staff time and financial resources are limited.
•	Register your cemetery committee with a Probate Court.
•	Provide legal assistance.
•	Arrest or prosecute individuals who violate Alabamaís cemetery laws. This is the responsibility of local law enforcement.
•	Repair cemetery markers.
•	Give non-profit status to your organization.
•	Perform Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR).
•	Provide detailed histories of a specific cemetery.
