City of Troy officials met with members of Oak Grove United Methodist Church Friday in an attempt to answer some of the congregation's questions concerning a proposed airport runway expansion.

Mayor Jimmy Lunsford, who called the meeting at city hall, had airport planners on hand to address specific concerns congregation members raised before the city council Jan. 13. Council members Johnny Witherington, Charles Meeks and Jason Reeves also attended the administrative meeting, meaning the council could not take any action.

Engineer Barry Mott and project planner Justin Thompson, of BWSC Engineers, who have planned the $6.2 million expansion for the city, explained the FAA-required justification study, land acquisitions, noise issues for the church and other issues raised by about a dozen church members in attendance.

"This meeting is to address the concerns and hopefully get support for the growth of the airport," Lunsford told the group.

But church members questioned whether the expansion of the runway to 6,500 is justified.
"I don't know how the city, state and federal government want to blow this much money," said Jeff Kervin, an adjacent land owner and member of the church.
