The Reconstruction County
The Upper Creek Indians were the first known inhabitants of what is now Chilton County. Creek burial grounds are noticeable around the Union Grove community, near I-65. The descendants of the Creeks still reside on this land and have documents to link them back to the land as far back as 1665. The oldest recorded burials are those of the Rocky Mount community in Chilton County. Some sources have Revolutionary Soldier Johnathan Clowers, buried at Caviness Gardens (194-NE), as the oldest recorded burial. He was buried in 1836. There are several unmarked graves throughout the county that could possibly be older.
Past, Present, and Future
Cemeteries are plentiful throughout Chilton County. As you can see, Chilton County has its share of interesting people buried here. There are several Revolutionary Soldiers buried in the county and your help is needed to locate and preserve these sites. There are also close to, if not over, one thousand Confederate Soldiers buried across our great county. Although I have not run across any Union Soldiers buried here, there are said to be a hand full.
Will You Help?
Chilton County has approximately 240 known cemeteries. Thanks to many people before me, this county has had almost every cemetery in the county located and surveyed. These cemetery surveys were mostly done in the 70s and 80s though. Volunteers are needed to do up-to-date surveys of all our cemeteries. This will help update existing records and record the condition of our cemeteries.
Deterioration due to vandalism and weathering.
Adoption
Here are some of the cemeteries that need adoption. Some cemeteries may need headstone repair while others may just need cleaned up and taken care of. If you would like to volunteer to help, whether it be surveying or adopting one of these cemeteries for restoration, contact me.

Your County Representative
As the ACPA Chilton County Representative, I will do all I can to help conserve these delicate places of our history and heritage. I am a member of the Prattville Dragoons, Sons of Confederate Veterans and am an Eagle Scout from Troop 74 in Jemison. I also attend Fountain of Life Church of God, just south of Calera, and teach in the computer lab at Shelby Elementary School. I love using all people, with interest, in preserving our cemeteries. It is my job to work with you, our leaders, and the media to integrate progress with preservation. If you have any information, would like to volunteer time, or have questions, please contact me at the contact info on this page. With your help our ancestors will not be forgotten in future generations.
